1. The Dog Catcher* by Lloyd Johnson
I meet this novelist at Book Expo America and was inspired to add The Dog Catcher to this year’s list after hearing his story on becoming a writer. He promised me that this book would be a page turner, and he was recommended by Ella Curry. I can’t wait to read it. 2. Let's Stay Together by J.J. Murray I’ve been a fan of J.J. Murray for years. The stories of love and lust are great reading for the summer. He’s latest release is Let’s Stay Together, a story about rebounding from heart break to loving again. 3. Loving Donovan by Bernice McFadden We love Bernice McFadden and the reissue of Loving Donovan is perfect summer reading. As I re-read Loving Donovan, I am intrigued by to read the new introduction from the acclaimed Terri McMillian. 4. All Hail The Queen: An urban tale by Meesha Mink All Hail the Queen: An urban tale adds the guilty element to my list this year. The “queen” of urban literature, Meesha Mink, introduces the sequel to Kiss the Ring released last year. 5. One Night by Eric Jerome Dickey What is summer reading without Eric Jerome Dickey on the list. Dickey’s summer read combines his touch erotic romance and his cinematic story telling in a novel set over a 24 hour period. One Night* promises to be a book you tell your friends about too. 6. White Gardenia* by Belinda Alexandria Belinda Alexandria is new to my reading library. Her book is here because I was intrigued by the title White Gardenia. White Gardenia is a novel that begins in Russia during the Cold War and how a mother and daughter survive the chaos and divide of time. 7. I Take You by Eliza Kennedy This book had me at “introducing a bride-to-be who has absolutely no business getting married.” I Take You by Eliza Kennedy promises a “self-assured protagonist” I cannot wait to meet the life of Lily Wilder. 8-10. The trilogy by Gillian Royce: The Carribean language and lifestyle fill the pages of the The Goat Woman of Largo Bay; The Man Who Turned Both Cheeks, and The Sea Grape Tree. We are hoping to host Ms Royce for a Wine and Words® soon. 11. The Winter People by Jennifer McMahone I can barely watch psychological thrillers, so I am hoping I can make it through The Winter People by Jennifer McMahone. The story is set in two distant times has the commonality of search for things lost. Interesting. 12. Fork & Pen: Stories by the Wren’s Nest Scribes at Brown Middles School Fork & Pen: Stories by the Wren’s Nest Scribes at Brown Middles School is filled with the creative voices of the next generation of writers. Each contributor was given a theme, education and mentoring and then they let their imaginations set free. Having met some of the authors makes this a treat. Sheronda Gipson, Written’s nonfiction editor was a mentor for this project. 13. Never Play With a Woman's Heart by Dana Hubbard Fellow Hamptonian’s latest release is love and agony set among Historically Black Colleges and University characters. Dana Hubbard’s Never Play With a Woman’s Heart has characters from Hampton and Howard, encased in complicated circumstances and consequence of love and lies. 14. Song of My Life: A biography of Margaret Walker by Carolyn Brown Margaret Walker is one of my all time favorite writers and Carolyn Brown, author of Song of My Life: A biography of Margaret Walker helps to expose the life of this literary giant to those that may be unfamiliar with her story. 15. Shirley, I Jest: A storied life by Cindy Williams I loved the television show “Lavergne & Shirley” so much that I named my dog Shirley! Shirley, I jest: A storied life by actress Cindy Williams is the actress’ memoir of her rise to stardom and the joys and pains that come with it.
