Perfect Peace by Daniel Black

It was heartbreaking. I felt as if I were on the scene from the start to the finish of the book. There were so many instances where I could personally relate to the issues the children were going through. It was as if Daniel Black knew of my life and pain.

5 - Loved it! Would recommend this book to others

Inmates Carrying on The Lost Form of Letterwriting

I was surprised when I read this article from the NY Times about inmates that write magazines.

The magazines quoted in the article - Esquire, Maxium, amd Ebony, receive up to 25% of the physical letter to the editors from inmates. We at Written receives 3-5 letters from inmates a week. Since my picture is in Written, I receive comments that range from, how I remind them of a relative, to marriage proposals! Most of the letters are simply requesting a response back. The shortest… Continue

Look before you leap

I am always thrilled to hear from authors who have just received their books in the mail. They are so excited about holding their baby in their hands and can't wait to tell everyone about it.

That is why I am amazed that some can also be so careless.

When they are forming the book, they are careful with whom they share their concept in fear that someone will steal the idea. They are afraid to send the book to a reputable publisher for fear that they will change their words or their… Continue

Written is publishing the viral letter from the two authors who graced our cover this spring. It has not been edited from the original email.

Dear Oprah:

We don't sing karaoke or dance with the stars, we have been contributing to the cultural landscape long before Jon & Kate, Britney,Rhianna and Chris or Stephanie Meyer and most of America, including you have probably never even heard of us.

E. Lynn Harris, the best-selling Arkansas author known for contemporary stories about African-Americans, died today during a West Coast book tour. His personal assistant confirmed an unspecified health event this morning, but said she was awaiting word from the scene before providing specifics.

Book Expo America - Nine years ago

My first Book Expo America was when I was the Director of Advertising at Black Issues Book Review. I had not been on the job but a few months before I was charged with coming up with a booth and a marketing plan for a trade conference I had never seen in Chicago.

As a good marketer, I did a lot of research. What I found out helped decide my marketing plan

1. You can not sell anything at book expo

2. It is a trade conference. The primary audience is booksellers such as… Continue

In the future, the largest publisher will be...

Amazon.

It is clear to me that the answer to all self-published authors nightmares is and will be Amazon.

As an on-line bookseller, they take most titles and by most, I mean 90% of titles being produced. Since they do not have to wharehouse any titles, there is no overhead cost to them offering the title and since they receive a portion of the sales price without having to pay for shipping, it is a purely profit business for them.

Now with the introduction of… Continue

How a book is born

The birthing process is amazing.

Whether it is a person, an animal, or a thing, bringing something from thought to creation is an awesome event.

When people write a book, I always make sure to tell them, congratulations. I know how scary a blank page can be. To fill them with words, approximately 35,000 of them, and then to finish with the words "the end" is an amazing adventure. But the completion of writing is hardly the birth of the book, it is merely the conception.… Continue
