Katandra,

Here's a link to one of the best articles I've read recently, "Publicity and Publishing today -The Battle Between Old School Versus New School" - http://novelspaces.blogspot.com/2010/06/guest-publicist-pam-perry-p...

self publishing via bookstand publishing.  i suggest seeking great reviews and recommendations, as this print on demand has been listed as one of the top 5 by Ms. Winfrey herself. research research research. the many ways to market yourself. business and post cards. press releases sent to local media. signing up for literary festivals i.e Decatur Book Festival... which i will be a part of this September!

Things like working social media for all it's worth; being prepared by always having business cards and other printed material on my books with me at all times, having an "elevator speech" ready when someone asks, "What is your book about," etc.

Since I published directly to Amazon Kindle, B&N Nook and Smashwords, I make it a point to take my Kindle everywhere I go. It's a conversation starter, and when people ask me about it, I can pull my book promo card from the side pocket of the Kindle cover, put it in their hand and tell them that I am a Kindle author.

May I suggest Rob Eager's blog: http://wildfiremarketing.blogspot.com/. It's full of great marketing advice.
